About VideoSpeak and how to use it
VideoSpeak privacy policy
Effective October 11, 2026. Applies to VideoSpeak 0.1.1.
VideoSpeak helps you practice speaking with video captions. Published by thexerer. For privacy questions, use the support contact on the Chrome Web Store listing or the VideoSpeak support page. Do not include recordings or private information in public issues.
Page access
Only after you click the extension icon, VideoSpeak reads the selected page's title, URL, visible YouTube captions or active HTML5 subtitle tracks, and the video time. Caption sampling stays inside the selected page; up to 300 encountered captions are held temporarily. It does not read forms, messages, cookies or unrelated browsing history. Disconnect stops sampling and looping. Navigating or closing the page removes its temporary script.
Local information
Imported SRT/VTT subtitles, typed transcripts and notes are processed locally. Saved phrases contain text, notes, source URL/title, timestamps and review schedules in chrome.storage.local, not Chrome sync. Clear phrases removes them. Exported Anki files and backups remain on your device until you delete them separately. Microphone recordings are held in memory only, up to 60 seconds each, and discarded when this workspace closes unless you download them. No audio is included in backups. Source tab metadata is kept in browser-session storage.
Optional speech service
Browser speech transcription is disabled until you explicitly consent for the current workspace session and press its button. The browser may send microphone audio to its speech-service provider, under that provider's privacy practices. VideoSpeak does not control that service, retain its remote data or guarantee its availability. You can leave transcription disabled, type your words and use local recording instead. Unchecking consent stops active recognition.
Sharing and controls
VideoSpeak has no developer server, analytics, advertising, payment or account system. It does not sell user information or use it for lending, creditworthiness or unrelated purposes. Only the optional browser speech service may process audio remotely. Opening a saved source URL navigates to that website, which has its own practices. Local saved text is not encrypted; someone with access to your browser profile may read it. Uninstalling removes extension storage. Future changes to data handling will be disclosed in an updated policy.
